Award Amount: $500
The NYSAWLA Student Scholarship recognizes seniors who demonstrate outstanding achievement in world language study and who plan to continue studying world languages at the college level.
Instructions for Teachers:
If you have a student who meets these criteria, please nominate them and submit their application on their behalf. The complete application includes:
- Official Transcript (PDF)
- Student provides a saved copy of their transcript.
- Letter of Recommendation (PDF)
- Your letter highlighting the student’s overall qualifications, commitment to language study, and academic performance in their Grade 12 language class.
- Video Resume (YouTube link, 2–3 minutes long)
- Created by the student, uploaded to YouTube (unlisted or public).
- The student must begin in English with the following line:
- “Hi, my name is [Student Name], I attend [School Name], I study [Language(s)], and this is my video resume for the NYSAWLA Student Scholarship.”
- The remainder of the video must be in the target language(s) they are studying.
The video should be 2–3 minutes long and serve as a short “commercial” about why languages are important to them. Possible content:

- How languages have shaped their life.
- Their future plans (college, career, global engagement).
- Ways they have used their language skills in the community.
- The impact they hope to make in the world.
Submission deadline is May 1st of the current school year.
Submission Checklist for Teachers
Before submitting, please have the following items ready:
- YouTube video link (with required intro + target language content, 2–3 minutes)
- PDF of student’s transcript
- PDF of your recommendation letter
