Effective February 22, 2026, all FLACS exam materials—including current-year exams and the FLACS archive—will transition fully to our secure, members-only portal.
This enhancement reflects NYSAWLA’s continued commitment to exam integrity, responsible assessment practices, and secure, streamlined access for districts across New York State.
Access to secure FLACS exams is now directly tied to active NYSAWLA membership accounts. All active members will be required to update their passwords, and two-factor authentication (2FA) will automatically apply using one-time verification codes sent by email.
The 2026 FLACS exams are scheduled for release on June 1, 2026, and will be available exclusively through the NYSAWLA Member Portal.
Non-secure materials, including rubrics and general administration resources, will remain publicly available on the NYSAWLA website.

As an NYSED-approved provider of CTLE credit, we’re committed to supporting your professional growth through engaging, relevant learning experiences. One of our signature offerings is our Item-Writing Workshop, where we take the latest guidance from NYSED’s Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages and turn it into a hands-on session. Teachers not only explore our FLACS exams in depth, but also collaborate to create high-quality questions and prompts that shape the very assessments used across the state.
Every year, we celebrate excellence in world language teaching and learning with awards and scholarships for both educators and students. We also take special pride in honoring one central office administrator whose leadership and advocacy make a lasting difference for their district’s world language program.
We’re excited to share that our Checkpoint B Interpersonal Speaking point scoring has been updated to reflect the latest recommendations from the NYSED Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages, as presented during their Checkpoint B Proficiency Assessment Guidance and Item Writing Summer 2025 Workshop.
Both our Checkpoint A and B Interpersonal and Presentational Rubrics are now fully aligned with this most recent guidance—helping ensure consistency, clarity, and fairness in scoring across the state.
We invite all member districts to share these rubrics with their teachers so that everyone—teachers and students alike—can feel confident and prepared when using them.
On October 10, the NYSAWLA Executive Team welcomed Chinese, French, Italian, and German teachers from across the region to a hands-on FLACS Item Writing Workshop at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School. Participants explored updates to the Checkpoint B exam, the upcoming ASL-B exam, and strategies for crafting high-quality, valid, and engaging exam items. The day also featured collaboration time, AI integration tips.

In order to maintain standards when the NYSED eliminated the World Language Checkpoint assessments, the FLACS exam consortium was formed and has become the largest in NYS due to the professionalism and dedication of our members.
