NYSAWLA President
Francesco L. Fratto

On behalf of the NYSAWLA executive board, I welcome you to our website. We were established to serve the needs of our members across New York State through professional development workshops; our goal is to help administrators and teachers develop the 21st skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity of our learners in our world language programs. We also provide networking opportunities to support one another as we navigate through the myriad of regulations and day to day challenges that we all face within our schools and programs. In order to maintain standards when the NYSED eliminated our Checkpoint assessments, the FLACS exam consortium was formed and has become the largest in NYS due to the professionalism and dedication of our members. Please consider joining our organization and the consortium.

  • Who is NYSAWLA?

NYSAWLA is a professional organization that supports World Language leaders with professional development, advocacy efforts, access to resources and the development and administration of Regional Checkpoint A and B Language Exams. Our members traditionally have been World Language Supervisors, Chairpersons or other school administrators.

  • What is the Exam Consortium?

Checkpoint A and B exams in Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Chinese are created by members of the NYSAWLA organization exam committee in order to provide districts with access to uniform, standards-based exams. These exams meet the NYS LOTE requirement for an Advanced Regents Diploma. Active NYSAWLA members who indicate that they would like to use our exams will have access to exams in June.
